Patterns Worth Noting
Poisoning as signature: Georgi Markov (ricin, 1978), Wadie Haddad (biological agent, 1978), Yuri Shchekochikhin (suspected thallium, 2003), Alexander Litvinenko (polonium-210, 2006), Sergei Skripal (Novichok, 2018), Alexei Navalny (Novichok, 2020 — survived), Kim Jong-nam (VX nerve agent, 2017). Multiple intelligence services use chemical assassination — Russian FSB, Mossad, and North Korean intelligence each have documented patterns.
Journalists who die investigating intelligence: Ghassan Kanafani (Mossad car bomb, 1972), Mino Pecorelli (Italian intel/P2, 1979), Manuel Buendia (CIA-DFS-cartels, 1984), Dele Giwa (Nigerian SSS, 1986), Naji al-Ali (Mossad, 1987), Danny Casolaro (PROMIS/CIA, 1991), Dmitry Kholodov (GRU briefcase bomb, 1994), Ilaria Alpi (SISMI/arms trafficking, 1994), Georgiy Gongadze (Ukrainian intel, 2000), Yuri Shchekochikhin (FSB/organized crime, 2003), Paul Klebnikov (Russian oligarchs, 2004), Gary Webb (CIA-crack, 2004), Anna Politkovskaya (Chechnya/FSB, 2006), Hrant Dink (Turkish MIT, 2007), Natalya Estemirova (Chechen war crimes, 2009), Lasantha Wickrematunge (Sri Lankan military intel, 2009), Stanislav Markelov & Anastasia Baburova (Chechen justice, 2009), Syed Saleem Shahzad (ISI, 2011), Michael Hastings (CIA director, 2013), Daphne Caruana Galizia (Panama Papers, 2017), Jan Kuciak (mafia-government, 2018), Shireen Abu Akleh (Israeli military, 2022), Arshad Sharif (ISI, 2022), Marine Vlahovic (Gaza/Israel, 2024). Investigating intelligence operations remains one of the most dangerous activities in journalism.
"Suicide" before testimony or publication: Karen Silkwood died en route to deliver documents to the New York Times. Danny Casolaro died the night before a key meeting. David Kelly died days after being exposed as the source challenging Iraq WMD claims. Gary Webb died after his career was systematically destroyed. Max Spiers died in Warsaw just before a conference presentation about global power structures. Isaac Kappy died 60 days before Epstein's arrest, after recording multiple videos saying "if I die, it wasn't suicide" and claiming to possess intelligence-linked blackmail files. The pattern: people who threaten to publish or testify die before they can.
Car crashes and car bombs: George S. Patton (1945 — alleged staged truck collision), Karen Silkwood (1974), Carlos Prats (1974), Orlando Letelier (1976), Ali Hassan Salameh (1979), Rafik Hariri (2005), Michael Hastings (2013), Daphne Caruana Galizia (2017), Philip Leonard (2024), Charles McMillan (2024). Vehicle-based killings remain a preferred method because they can be disguised as accidents.
New Mexico defense corridor scientist cluster (2024–2026): Christopher Fallen (AFRL physicist, asphyxiated, Feb 2024), Philip Leonard (LANL explosives chemist, head-on crash, Feb 2024), Charles McMillan (former LANL director, head-on crash, Sep 2024), Jason Thomas (Novartis/DOD cancer researcher, found in frozen lake, 2025/2026). Four defense-connected scientists dead in the Albuquerque–Los Alamos–Boston corridor within two years, alongside additional disappearances (Monica Reza, William McCasland) and deaths (Nuno Loureiro, Carl Grillmair) documented by The Sentinel Network. Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) has publicly stated "the numbers seem very high in these certain areas of research." The cluster centers on LANL, AFRL at Kirtland AFB, and DOD-contracted research — the heart of the U.S. nuclear weapons and advanced defense establishment.
Operation Condor: Salvador Allende (1973), Victor Jara (1973), Charles Horman (1973), Frank Teruggi (1973), Carlos Prats (1974), Bernardo Leighton (1975), Juan Jose Torres (1976), Zelmar Michelini (1976), Hector Gutierrez Ruiz (1976), Orlando Letelier (1976), Ronni Moffitt (1976). The CIA-backed coordination of South American dictatorships to hunt and kill dissidents across borders — including on US soil. Six countries collaborated to assassinate political opponents in each other's territory.
Mossad's targeted killing program: Ghassan Kanafani (1972), Wael Zwaiter (1972), Mahmoud Hamshari (1973), Hussein al-Bashir (1973), Wadie Haddad (1978), Ali Hassan Salameh (1979), Yahya El Mashad (1980), Naji al-Ali (1987), Gerald Bull (1990), Atef Bseiso (1992), Fathi Shaqaqi (1995), Yahya Ayyash (1996), Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh (2010), Mohamed Zouari (2016), Fadi al-Batsh (2018), Aziz Asbar (2018), Mohsen Fakhrizadeh (2020). From Operation Wrath of God through AI-assisted remote-controlled weapons, Israel's intelligence service has conducted the most documented assassination program of any Western-aligned nation.
Iranian nuclear scientist assassinations (1980-2020): Yahya El Mashad (bludgeoned in Paris, 1980 — Iraqi program), Masoud Alimohammadi (motorcycle bomb, 2010), Majid Shahriari (magnetic car bomb, 2010), Darioush Rezaeinejad (motorcycle shooting, 2011), Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan (magnetic car bomb, 2012), Mohamed Zouari (shot in Tunisia, 2016 — Hamas drone engineer), Fadi al-Batsh (shot in Malaysia, 2018 — Palestinian engineer), Aziz Asbar (car bomb in Syria, 2018 — Syrian rocket scientist), Mohsen Fakhrizadeh (AI-assisted remote gun, 2020). A decades-long covert campaign against scientists working on programs hostile to Israel — from Iraq's Osirak reactor through Iran's enrichment program to Hamas/Hezbollah weapons development.
Russian energy executive deaths (2022): Leonid Shulman (Jan), Alexander Tyulakov (Feb), Sergei Protosenya (Apr), Ravil Maganov (Sep). At least eight Russian energy executives died under suspicious circumstances in 2022, the year Russia invaded Ukraine. Multiple were ruled suicides despite evidence of foul play. Lukoil's board had called for an end to the war before its chairman fell from a hospital window.
Sealed records and destroyed evidence: David Kelly's records sealed until 2073. Danny Casolaro's briefcase vanished from his hotel room. Karen Silkwood's documents were never found in the car wreckage. Frank Olson's CIA files were largely destroyed in 1973. Yuri Shchekochikhin's medical records were sealed. Mary Pinchot Meyer's diary was seized by CIA counterintelligence chief Angleton and allegedly burned. Job Price's investigation documents have been withheld from his family by the Navy; private investigator found suppressed evidence.
Defectors who don't survive: Georgi Markov (killed 9 years after defecting), Alexander Litvinenko (6 years), Sergei Skripal (8 years), Maxim Kuzminov (6 months), Denis Voronenkov (months). The message is clear: leaving is never forgiven.
South African apartheid intelligence: Steve Biko (1977), Rick Turner (1978), Ruth First (1982), Gerard Hoarau (1985), Dulcie September (1988), David Webster (1989), Chris Hani (1993). South Africa's BOSS/NIS/CCB carried out assassinations across Africa and Europe, using letter bombs, shootings, and car bombs against anti-apartheid activists. Several killers confessed at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
COINTELPRO and domestic targeting: Fred Hampton and Mark Clark were killed in a coordinated FBI-police operation using an informant's floor plans. John Lennon was under FBI COINTELPRO surveillance for years before his 1980 assassination. The FBI's COINTELPRO program targeted Black Panthers, civil rights leaders, and antiwar activists. The Church Commission exposed these programs but domestic surveillance and targeting continued.
Mentors and witnesses to assassinations dying shortly after: Jeff Webb (Kirk's mentor, "pickleball accident" six months after Kirk's assassination, 2026). When a political assassination may involve intelligence services, those closest to the victim — who may possess knowledge about threats, pressure, or circumstances leading to the killing — become potential targets themselves. Fatal head injuries from recreational sports are statistically rare and difficult to distinguish from inflicted injuries.
Content creators killed for reaching mass audiences with dangerous ideas: John Lennon (musician/activist, FBI COINTELPRO target, shot 1980), Bill Cooper (author/radio host, predicted 9/11, killed 2001), Isaac Kappy (actor, accused Hollywood elites of pedophilia, fell from bridge 2019), Trevor Moore (comedian, Comedy Central/100M+ YouTube views, exposed Hollywood child trafficking, Epstein/COVID kill switch theory, CIA operations, Illuminati — fell from balcony 2021). The pattern: individuals who use mainstream cultural platforms to deliver explosive anti-elite content to audiences far larger than investigative journalists could reach. The comedy or entertainment format makes the content viral and accessible, bypassing the skepticism filters that protect powerful people. Each died under circumstances that — while officially explained — generated persistent public suspicion.
African leaders assassinated by intelligence services: Patrice Lumumba (Congo, CIA/Belgian, 1961), Eduardo Mondlane (Mozambique, Portuguese PIDE, 1969), Amilcar Cabral (Guinea-Bissau, Portuguese PIDE, 1973), Marien Ngouabi (Congo, French SDECE, 1977), Samora Machel (Mozambique, South African NIS/CCB, 1986), Thomas Sankara (Burkina Faso, French DGSE, 1987), Chris Hani (South Africa, 1993), Laurent-Desire Kabila (DRC, Rwandan intel, 2001). From the Congo to Mozambique to Burkina Faso, intelligence services have systematically eliminated African leaders who challenged colonial/neo-colonial interests.
Operation Gladio and stay-behind networks: NATO's secret stay-behind armies across Europe have been linked to political violence including the Aldo Moro kidnapping (Italy, 1978) and the Olof Palme assassination (Sweden, 1986). The "Strategy of Tension" used terrorism to manipulate politics.
The Church Commission's legacy: The 1975 Church Committee confirmed CIA assassination plots against at least five foreign leaders: Castro, Lumumba, Trujillo, Schneider, and Diem. Executive orders banning assassination followed — but targeted killings continued under different legal frameworks, evolving from covert assassination into the drone program's "disposition matrix."
CIA and drugs: Manuel Buendia was assassinated by Mexico's DFS chief for exposing CIA-DFS-cartel connections. Gary Webb exposed the CIA-Contra-crack pipeline. Enrique Camarena was a DEA agent whose kidnapping and murder allegedly involved CIA assets. Bill Cooper alleged CIA drug trafficking in Behold a Pale Horse. The pattern of intelligence agencies facilitating drug trafficking — and silencing those who expose it — spans decades.
Russian opposition deaths cluster: Sergei Yushenkov (2003), Yuri Shchekochikhin (2003), Paul Klebnikov (2004), Anna Politkovskaya (2006), Alexander Litvinenko (2006), Natalya Estemirova (2009), Stanislav Markelov (2009), Sergei Magnitsky (2009), Boris Nemtsov (2015), Alexei Navalny (2024). A systematic pattern of eliminating critics of the Russian state.
Key Reference Points
The Church Commission (1975)
The Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities (the Church Committee) investigated CIA assassination plots, domestic surveillance, and covert operations. Its report confirmed plots against Castro (Cuba), Lumumba (Congo), Trujillo (Dominican Republic), Schneider (Chile), and Diem (South Vietnam). Led to Executive Order 11905 banning political assassination.
Executive Orders on Assassination
- E.O. 11905 (Ford, 1976) — First ban on political assassination
- E.O. 12036 (Carter, 1978) — Reiterated the ban
- E.O. 12333 (Reagan, 1981) — Current version, still in force: "No person employed by or acting on behalf of the United States Government shall engage in, or conspire to engage in, assassination."
From Assassination Ban to Targeted Killing
Despite the assassination ban, the US government developed legal frameworks for "targeted killing" — first through covert action findings, then through the post-9/11 AUMF and drone warfare program. The CIA's "disposition matrix" and the DOD's Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) now conduct killings that would have been called assassinations before 1976. Anwar al-Awlaki — a US citizen — was killed by a CIA drone strike in 2011 without trial.

Senator Frank Church, 1975: "The United States must not adopt the tactics of the enemy. Means are as important as ends. Crisis makes it tempting to ignore the wise restraints that make men free. But each time we do so, each time the means we use are wrong, our inner strength, the strength which makes us free, is lessened."

Background
Since the Church Commission exposed CIA assassination plots in 1975, the public has known that intelligence services murder people. What the Church Commission revealed — plots against Castro, Lumumba, Trujillo, Schneider, and Diem — was supposed to end the practice. President Ford signed Executive Order 11905 in 1976: "No employee of the United States Government shall engage in, or conspire to engage in, political assassination." Reagan's E.O. 12333 repeated it verbatim in 1981.
The killings never stopped. They evolved.
This project documents intelligence service murders, political assassinations, and suspicious deaths of journalists, whistleblowers, scientists, dissidents, and political figures from the Cold War to the present. The focus is on killings carried out by or connected to intelligence agencies worldwide — CIA, MI6, Mossad, KGB/FSB/GRU, DINA, ISI, Saudi GIP, and others — with special attention to operations targeting Americans or conducted to control American politics.
